Horizontal Band Saws

A horizontal band saw is also commonly referred to as a cut-off saw or horizontal metal-cutting bandsaw.

The purpose of a horizontal band saw is to make fast, accurate, and straight cut-offs in heavy stock materials such as steel tubing, structural shapes, and solid metal bars.

Most standard industrial horizontal band saws utilize flood or mist cutting fluid to lubricate the cut, reduce friction, clear chips, and prolong blade life, though certain specialized heavy-duty American-made saws—such as heavy mitering saws from Ellis Manufacturing—are engineered to run completely dry without any liquid coolant at all.

The 3-tooth rule states that you must always have a minimum of 3 teeth engaged in the workpiece at any given time (with 6 to 12 teeth being the optimal range); violating this by using too coarse a blade on thin material causes the teeth to straddle the stock, catch, and strip off, while using too many teeth packs the gullets with chips and overheats the blade.
