Metal grinding dust is commonly referred to as swarf, or more specifically as grinding sludge or metallic particulate.

A good dust collector features high static pressure performance (CFM), efficient two-stage cyclone separation to protect the impeller from heavy debris, fine-micron filtration (such as HEPA or pleated cartridge filters) to trap microscopic particles, and a safe, sealed containment system to prevent hazardous dust from leaking back into the shop air.

Yes, metal dust can be extremely harmful because inhaling fine particles—especially from toxic metals like stainless steel, chrome, or lead—can lead to chronic respiratory issues, metal fume fever, or long-term systemic toxicity, while flammable metal dusts (like aluminum or magnesium) also pose severe explosive hazards.

Many finely divided reactive metal powders are extremely flammable and present a severe combustible dust explosion hazard. The most common flammable and explosive metal dusts include aluminum, magnesium, titanium, zinc, iron, and zirconium. When suspended in the air at the right concentration, a spark or ignition source can cause a catastrophic explosion, which is why specialized dust collection systems with explosion venting, wet-type filtration, or grounded antistatic components are mandatory.
