Compression Router Bits

Compression router bits are ideal for cutting laminated materials like double-sided melamine or plywood because they combine up-cut and down-cut flutes to shear the material toward the center. This design prevents top and bottom surface chipping, resulting in perfectly clean, smooth edges on both sides of the sheet.

Yes, solid carbide compression bits can be professionally resharpened by specialized tool-grinding services, though it must be done carefully to preserve the precise geometry where the up-cut and down-cut flutes meet.

A compression bit features an up-cut spiral on the bottom and a down-cut spiral on the top, which simultaneously shears the top and bottom edges inward to prevent chipping or splintering on both sides of laminated or veneered sheet goods.

A router bit should be tightened securely by firmly tightening the collet nut until it holds the shank with absolute rigidity—typically requiring a firm wrench pull or a half-turn past initial resistance—making sure never to overtighten to the point of stripping threads or leaving the shank loose enough to slip or chatter during high-RPM cuts.

An undersized router bit is a specialty bit engineered with a cutting diameter slightly smaller than nominal sizing (such as 23/64 inch or 49/64 inch instead of a full 3/8 or 3/4 inch) to match the actual, real-world metric or undersized thicknesses of modern sheet goods like plywood, ensuring a snug, rattle-free fit in dados and joints without loose gaps.

Yes — a router bit should always be inserted so that at least 3/4 of the shank is seated in the collet, with a small gap (roughly 1/16 inch) left between the bit's cutting flutes and the collet nut; a bit that isn't fully seated can slip, vibrate, or snap under load.
