Detail sanders are small, precise sanding tools built for the places a full-size sander can't reach: inside corners, tight curves, narrow grooves, spindles, louvers, carved trim, and the edges of cabinet and furniture parts. If you've ever watched a random-orbit sander round over a crisp edge or fail to reach into a 90-degree corner, a detail sander is the tool that fixes that. Shop Iron Line's detail sanders for wood below, then use the guide underneath to match the right tool to the job.
Featured detail sander
Proxxon Detail Sander OZI/E — $172.80
Oscillating motion, variable speed, and a low-noise balanced DC motor in a glass-fibre reinforced polyamide housing. Ships complete with four sanding discs (two 80 grit, one 150 grit, one 240 grit), so it's ready to work on delivery.
What Is a Detail Sander Used For?
A detail sander concentrates its abrasive into a small tip or pad so you can work exactly where the problem is. Woodworkers reach for one to clean up inside corners after a glue-up, smooth the profile of moulding or chair spindles, feather a repair into surrounding finish, scuff-sand between coats in awkward spots, and strip old finish from detailed surfaces without gouging the flat areas next to them. The Proxxon OZI/E is built for exactly this: sanding in very tight spots like corners, sides, and inaccessible areas. Its oscillating motion keeps operation quiet and, per Proxxon, also makes it usable for cutting, plunge cuts, and filing.
Common Types of Detail Sanders
Mouse and palm detail sanders use a small triangular pad that reaches into 90-degree corners. They're the most familiar type for DIY and trim work.
Oscillating detail sanders move a small pointed pad back and forth in a tight arc, which is why they excel in corners and narrow channels and why they run quieter than a spinning pad.
Finger and detail-file belt sanders run a narrow belt on a small arm to reach into grooves and around curved or open profiles.
One honest note: our Detail Sanders collection currently features one model, the Proxxon OZI/E. Iron Line's catalog is built mostly around shop-scale woodworking machines, so for related small-format sanding we also carry tools in neighboring collections, listed below.

Choosing Grit for a Detail Sander
Start coarse only as far as the job demands. Around 80 grit removes old finish or levels a rough spot, 150 grit smooths and blends it, and 240 grit gives you a clean surface ready for stain or finish. The OZI/E ships with discs in all three steps. For more on picking abrasives, read what grit counts as medium sandpaper, and for the bigger picture see our best sander for woodworking guide and how to sand curved surfaces. Replacement discs and belts live in sanding belts, discs and sleeves.
Detail Sander FAQ
Are detail sanders good for wood?
Yes. Detail sanders for woodworking are used for corners, profiles, spindles, and trim where a larger sander would round over edges or simply not fit.
What comes with the Proxxon OZI/E detail sander?
Four sanding discs: two 80 grit, one 150 grit, and one 240 grit. It also has variable speed control.
Which stores carry detail sanders in stock?
Iron Line Tools sells detail sanders online and ships them to you. Call 800-698-1646 to confirm current availability and delivery timing before you order.
Where can I buy a detail sander for sale online?
Right here. The Proxxon OZI/E is $172.80, and the related sanders above range from $179.10 to $380.00.
What's the difference between a detail sander and an orbital sander?
An orbital sander covers flat areas quickly with a larger pad. A detail sander trades coverage for reach, getting into corners and tight spots an orbital sander can't touch.
