Edge Sanders

An edge sander is a stationary machine designed to sand the edges of wood panels perfectly straight, square, and flat. It uses a long, fast-moving abrasive belt backed by a rigid platen, which prevents the unevenness or edge-rounding you inevitably get with a handheld sander. In a professional cabinet or furniture shop, it’s an absolute necessity for quickly squaring up cabinet doors, smoothing tough end-grain, shaping curved pieces, and perfectly flush-trimming solid wood edging before finishing.

A stationary oscillating edge sander (featuring a tilting abrasive belt and a graphite platen backing) is widely considered the best tool for high-production edge work because it prevents belt burning, eliminates hand fatigue, and ensures perfectly square or custom-angled edges across long workpieces.

Use an edge sander when you need to quickly square, flatten, and smooth the straight edges of boards, panels, or cabinet components, or when you want to prep edge banding and bevel square stock with high consistency.

For Rough Sizing and Shaping: Start with 80-grit or 100-grit sandpaper to quickly true up uneven sawn edges, square up stock, or remove heavy milling marks. For General Smoothing and Prep: Use 120-grit to 150-grit for standard wood edge preparation and smoothing prior to assembly or finishing. For Fine Finishing: Finish with 180-grit to 220-grit to prepare veneered or solid wood edges for staining, painting, or clear coating without showing sanding streaks.

The golden rule of sanding is to never skip grits—advancing sequentially through sandpaper grades (such as 80, 120, 150, 180, and 220) rather than jumping from coarse to fine, which ensures you completely eliminate the previous scratch pattern and leave a flawless, uniform surface.

To sand a perfectly straight edge, use a stationary edge sander with a flat, rigid platen — like our Laguna 6|89T — and feed the board steadily against the belt while keeping consistent pressure; the platen and fixed table keep the edge square, which is far more reliable than trying to hold an edge straight freehand with a handheld sander.
