To calculate the correct size for a dust collector, you need to add up the total cubic feet per minute (CFM) required by all machines running simultaneously and factor in the static pressure loss from the length and bends of your ductwork.
The air-to-cloth (A/C) ratio is calculated by dividing your total airflow in CFM by the total square footage of active filter media surface area (A/C=CFM/Filter Area), with lower ratios (typically between 4:1 and 6:1 for fine industrial dust) indicating better filtration efficiency, longer filter lifespan, and reduced pressure drop.
You can accurately measure airflow (CFM) using an anemometer (or pitot tube connected to a digital manometer) inserted into a straight run of ductwork to record air velocity in feet per minute (FPM), then multiplying that velocity by the cross-sectional area of the duct in square feet.
