A reamer enlarges, finishes, and smooths a pre-drilled hole to a precise diameter with high accuracy, removing only a small amount of material along its sides rather than cutting a hole from scratch like a drill bit.

Reamers are generally grouped as hand reamers, turned manually with a tap wrench, and machine (chucking) reamers, run in power tools like drill presses and lathes for faster, more precise hole finishing.

To ream a hole in metal, secure the workpiece, drill a slightly undersized pilot hole, then feed the rotating reamer straight through with cutting oil to bring the hole to its exact final diameter with a smooth finish.

A taper pin reamer is a specialized stepped, tapered reamer that turns a straight drilled hole into a matching tapered hole so a standard taper pin fits tightly.

The pilot hole should be about 2% to 5% smaller than the reamer's final diameter, leaving roughly 0.005 to 0.030 inch of material for the reamer to remove.

Reaming cannot create a hole on its own; it requires an existing pre-drilled hole to work from, and it follows that hole's path rather than correcting any misalignment in the original drilling.
