A Weldon shank is a round tool shaft machined with one or two flat sides so a set screw in the drill's arbor can bite down and lock it firmly in place, preventing the cutter from slipping or spinning under heavy torque.
The industry-standard Weldon shank measures 3/4 inch (19.05 mm) in diameter with one or two machined flats, matching the arbor on most magnetic drill presses used for structural steel work.
The most common is the Weldon shank, a flat-sided shaft locked in place with set screws, while a quick-change or universal shank snaps into a proprietary quick-release arbor for faster bit changes without tools; some mag drill brands also use threaded or one-touch shank systems.
