While standard reciprocating saws from brands like DeWALT or Milwaukee Tool use a push-and-pull blade motion, high-volume production shops upgrade to automatic push-fed saws from OMGA or Cameron Automation to automatically push material into a high-speed crosscut blade.
The safest and most highly regarded push block on the market is the Microjig GRR-RIPPER. Unlike a standard flat push stick that only applies forward pressure, the GRR-RIPPER controls the workpiece in three directions simultaneously: it pushes down against the table (preventing lift), pushes inward against the fence (preventing drift), and pushes forward through the cut. Because it's designed to pass directly over the top of the spinning blade, it effectively acts as a moving guard for your hand while giving you total control of both the keeper piece and the offcut.
The three non-negotiable safety devices you should always use are: Riving Knife: A curved piece of metal positioned directly behind the blade. It keeps the two halves of the cut board from pinching together and catching the back teeth of the blade, which is the primary cause of violent kickback. Blade Guard: A clear plastic or metal shield that sits over the blade. It acts as a physical barrier to keep your hands away from the spinning teeth and helps deflect flying dust and chips. Push Block or Push Stick: A handheld device used to safely guide the workpiece through the blade while keeping your fingers at a safe distance.
It is always better to push a sliding miter saw (pulling the saw head completely out toward you, plunging it down, and then pushing it forward through the wood); pulling the blade backward into the wood while cutting creates a dangerous climbing action where the blade can grab the material and violently kick the saw upward toward the operator.
You can identify the operation type by looking at the sliding mechanism and intended cutting motion: a push-fed saw requires you to feed the material into a stationary blade or push the running blade forward into the workpiece, whereas a pull saw (like Japanese pull saws or pull-arm miter saws) cuts on the backward pulling stroke.
You should never cut extremely small pieces of material, ferrous metals without a specialized blade, or freehand unsupported round stock with a miter saw due to the extremely high risk of kickback and severe injury.
